Between the ages of 40 and 55, men will experience a phenomenon similar to menopause in women. Known as the male menopause, andropause is the result of a drop in testosterone in the man’s body. Men may begin to see symptoms of andropause as early as their mid-30’s, when testosterone levels begin to decline at a rate of 1-2% a year.
Testosterone is an important factor in building protein, producing erections, healthy sex drive and stamina. It also contributes to liver function, prostate gland growth, and production of blood cells, as well as bone formation. Studies show that the decline of testosterone during andropause may put men at risk for health conditions such as heart disease and bone loss.
Symptoms occur gradually and are often attributed to the aging process, but none of them mean that you are getting old. Testing can be done to determine your current hormone levels. By working with you and your healthcare practitioner, we can strive to eliminate these symptoms.
By working with you and your healthcare practitioner we can develop a hormone regimen specific to you. The goal is to help you enjoy an overall healthier sense of well-being. As with any prescription, the risks and side effects of testosterone therapy needs to be discussed and evaluated by your healthcare practitioner and pharmacist.
